Domain Names - Introduction

A domain name is the unique name of your web site. It is always suffixed with an extension. The domain name of this web site is selling-it and the extension is .com. The complete web site name is www.ancientrade.com.

All names must be registered and an annual fee paid. Your ISP will organize this, but not until you have decided on a name. Choosing a good domain name can be like having a tooth pulled at the dentist. It can be quick and easy, but it might be long, drawn out and very painful.

Once you have decided on a domain name you can check if someone else has already registered their interest in that name. If a domain name is already being used by a site you are too late. But there are many domain names that have been registered and in fact are for sale. www.greatdomains.com offer a brokerage service in domain names.

But whatever name you choose here are some suggestions to get the most out of your domain name.

Register As Early As You Can

Even if your web site is a distant dot on the horizon of time, register your name now! It may not be available in a month, six months or even in ten minutes. Anyone can register a domain name and it's a very simple process. And once it's registered, unless the owner is willing to sell it to you, it's gone.

Country Codes

Perhaps the domain name you want is already used. Consider using a different extension. For instance media.com (at the time of writing anyway) is apparently available and the suggested offer price is $750,000. But media.to, media.tp media.com.tp are a few of the many variations of media that are available for as little as $30 per annum. These names use extensions of small countries; Tonga and East Timor. But the name will work all around the world in exactly the same way. The domain registration site www.alldomains.com offer a comprehensive search of domain names using country codes and variations. And for your convenience here is a complete list of country codes.

Name Variation

What a difference a hyphen or an s can make. For example wedding.com and weddings.com are registered to different people running different businesses. Even Ford Motor Company missed out on registering www.fords.com. But when deciding on your name, consider registering the variations available with spelling, punctuation and extensions.

Who Owns Your Domain?

Domain Names are never owned by anyone; they are registered for use on an annual basis. When you register your domain name check that you are entered as the "registrant" (the owner of the domain name). Because the process of registering a name is usually performed by an agent (such as your ISP) errors can occur. Most of the time, this is done correctly, but there are those circumstances where the ISP ends up putting themselves down as the "registrant" or even someone else altogether. If this happens and you later want to change ISPs things can be very difficult.

Perform a domain name search on the name once you have registered and check that the registrant is who you want it to be. The earlier the mistake can be found the easier it will be to get it fixed.
