Web Site Promotion - Introduction

In this section we look examine a variety of methods to promote your web site. There are as many ways to promote a web site as there are web sites. And it is important to give something unique that is appealing to visitors and reviewers. In something unique I am referring to the uniqueness of the entity that the web site represents, whether it be a business or a church or a an information service.

Demonstrate a little of the values and culture and flare and color that lie behind the web site. This helps to make visitors feel relaxed and comfortable when they visit. Something personal is always more effective. You can't be all things to all people, so be yourself through your web site; whatever self may be.

So welcome to our web site. In this section of the web site we look at a variety of ideas to promote your web site to your target market.

Let's start with the assumption that your web site is brand new and so far you've not performed any promotion. Obviously this might not be the case for your site but we have to start somewhere. Also the theme of the material we propose on this web site is based around minimal cost options for promotion. Our site is primarily intended for web site with a modest promotion budget, but which has enthusiastic web masters who can and will spend time.

And promotion of a web site takes a great deal of time, spread over several months. It is an ongoing process, and in reality we never should stop developing or promoting the site. So don't expect that you get it all finished in a couple of days or weeks and then we can close the book; it just doesn't work like that if the web site is to be successful.

First Step - Review Your Web Site

In this web site we provide a wide range of information about the use of keywords, site optimization, and page presentation. Before you do anything review your site taking account of that information, because the first thing you need to do is to submit your site to a variety of search engines and directories. And frankly it is pointless to go to all the effort of submitting unless that basic web site construction is sound. And remember content quality, quality, quality is the name of the game. All search engines need to enhance their value by including your web site, so unless there is some quality there wont be value and your submissions are in likelihood going to be rejected.

Step Two - Directories

The best place to start is to submit your site to some of the widely used directories. Directories have the advantage that all content listed has been reviewed by real people called editors or reviewers. Once a directory or three has decided to include your web site, getting listings in search engines (which are all computer based) tends to be far more successful, particularly the site ranking. We discuss directories and site submission in another part of this site so click here now if you haven't read about site submission. And we should add, submitting to directories is easy and doesn't require much effort. It's ensuring that your submission is accepted that is the hard part.

There are many directories but here are some major directories which you should submit your web site to:

Directory Project (also known as DMOZ)

Yahoo

Looksmart

I'd suggest that you try first for a free listing (unless time is important and you're prepared to pay). If your site has quality it is likely to be accepted. Before submitting read carefully the terms and conditions each organization displays and check your site conforms. And be patient, as it can take a few weeks for your site to be reviewed, particularly if the category under which you wish to list has minimal staff. Also think carefully about the category listing, because once listed it is virtually impossible to change the category.

Step Three - Search Engines

There are a huge number and variety of search engines, exactly how many no one really knows, but at least 75,000. As well as the mainstream search engines there are many specialist engines in operation. We have included an extensive list with urls elsewhere on the site. Click here if you want to display the list. Please note that our site is English based and so we have selected English based search engines. If your site is based on a language other than English then our material is as relevant, and we'd recommend an excellent resource at the Translate Me Group.

Step Four - Promotion

Once you done the basics above you're ready for the real task of web site promotion. I should add that submitting your web site to directories and search engines is an iterative process, I spend a little time each week submitting to new ones. It is a rather dull task and although there are automated software products and web sites which can do hundreds at a time I've never found they are actually very effective (I'm not saying they can't work for you, but they've not worked for me). So to avoid the boredom and keep myself motivated and, well sane, I do a few new ones every week.

All of the ideas we present here work for different people. You need to try different methods and find and use those that work for your site. There is no magic formula. Each of the sections presented on the menu at the top left describes the what, how, why along with advantages and disadvantages. Good luck.
