Programs - Introduction
An
affiliate program offers a means to earn additional income from your web site.
Affiliate programs have become more and more popular with many thousands now operating.
It's a simple concept. Someone has a product or service which they believe is
or will be in demand, but they need a team to market and promote that product
or service.
And to create a marketing team they encourage other web sites
to sign up as affiliates. Affiliates are then paid a commission on sales where
they provide the referral(s). Typically also, the higher the number of referrals
resulting in sales, the higher the commission earned.
Another factor is
that the affiliates themselves usually don't actually make the sale. Thus they
don't need to deal with any of the work in processing a sale. Effectively the
affiliate earns commissions without actually needing to take orders, ship merchandise,
deal with the customers, stock inventory, and perhaps best of all, there is no
financial risk.
Another factor which makes affiliates so popular is that
they are almost always made very simple to sign-up to. Most of the time, all you
have to do is fill out a simple sign-up form and paste a few lines of html code
into your web site. The html code is usually a banner type advertisement you include
on your web site, which when clicked, takes the visitor to the site where the
actual sale is made.
The transfer process, taking the visitor from your
site to the affiliate program will include your unique referral number, which
allows the affiliate to calculate your commission. Your referral number is usually
parsed in one of two ways; as a parameter to the web page, i.e. www.affiliate.com
?r=1234, or as a cookie file.
Some
affiliate programs act as a multilevel marketing plan. Under this scenario you
can also earn commission from any down stream affiliates' sales that you referred.
Sadly
too there are those who will say anything to sell you their get-rich-quick schemes.
There are many affiliate programs that take your money and give you precious little
useful information. Also, because you've signed up as an affiliate, they'll continue
to market products to you. All the while promising that with the next purchase
you'll have the answer to income and wealth. And once you've started to invest
(not perhaps the correct word) it's a difficult decision to stop wasting further
money. Effectively it is a decision which cuts your losses and takes you out of
the scheme. Such schemes work on greed, naivety and are designed to exploit.
